COB LED Strip Explained: How Dotless Lighting Works

Table of Contents

In a cabinet sample, the question is usually whether the buyer sees light or sees a row of emitters. A COB LED strip puts the chips close enough under a coating to make that row less obvious. I would put a short length behind the specified diffuser, then look from the customer side. The answer may change when the supply lead, shallow channel and operating heat are all part of the setup.

Raymates has flexible COB products for commercial work in standard, narrow and extended-run formats. The channel drawing and run plan tell us which family to discuss; a brightness number on its own does not.

What Is a COB LED Strip and How Does It Work?

Chip on board is what COB stands for. The emitters are mounted along the board without the familiar outline of separate SMD packages. Their coating produces a smoother-looking band, though a poor join in the installed line will still show.

Chip-on-Board Construction

Under the coating sits a flexible printed circuit board (PCB). The phosphor spreads visible output from many small chips, making a flexible COB LED strip light useful around a gently curved edge. It remains an electrical board. Route it within the permitted bend, keep tension off the solder points and avoid repeated twisting; a hard fold can damage a conductor.

The Formation of a Continuous Light Line

Closely packed emitters reduce the dots, yet the finished line has other weak spots. Leave a gap at a join and the viewer may see it. Put the same line against polished shelving and a reflection may double it. A shallow channel changes the view again. I would inspect the installed diffuser from the normal viewing position before approving the effect.

Why Does COB Lighting Look Dotless Compared with SMD Strips?

SMD and COB can both light a long edge. The choice turns on whether separate emitters remain visible from the place where people will actually stand or sit.

Reduced Visibility of Individual LED Points

SMD tape places packages at intervals. Close to a visible surface, those intervals can read as dots. COB’s tighter emitting line helps where a shelf, cove or trim is shallow and in view. A deeper diffuser may make SMD perfectly suitable, and some projects do not mind visible points. Compare the installed effect before treating either technology label as a verdict.

The Influence of Diffusers and Installation Conditions

The diffuser and aluminum profile have different jobs. One can mask a remaining bright spot; the other holds the strip and can move heat into the surrounding structure. I would mock up the specified depth and view it against the real shelf or stone, since a glossy surface may mirror imperfections. Leave the connector room to sit without crushing its wires, and check temperature after a representative operating period.

Which Raymates COB LED Strip Fits Your Project?

The Raymates range splits linear COB work into standard-width, narrow and extended-run formats. Measure the groove before shopping by product family. A strip that fits a cabinet recess may be the wrong physical choice for a long cove even if both produce a smooth line.

Hot Selling COB Strip for General Linear Lighting

The Hot Selling COB Strip, RM-COBW480-24V8L, is a DC24V design with an 8mm PCB and 480 LEDs/m. Raymates lists a 10W/m option and CRI above 90. Its flexible board and adhesive backing make sense for a straight run or a gentle bend. For a hotel accent or retail display, try the flexible COB LED strip light at the intended viewing distance and compare white tone beside the products; that is where a color mismatch will show.

Mini Size COB Strip for Narrow Installations

The Mini Size COB Strip is for the groove that has no room for a wider board. RM-COBW480-5V3 is the listed DC5V configuration with a 3mm PCB, 5W/m rating and 25mm cutting unit. Before buying a 3mm thin COB LED strip light, measure the space for its connector as well as the tape. In a glass display case, a small mounting error may be reflected across the shelf, so I would mock up the real finish.

Super Long COB Strip for Extended Lighting Runs

Raymates positions the Super Long COB Strip for long coves, corridors and architectural outlines. RM-COBW480-24V10-20M uses DC24V, a 10mm PCB and 10W/m, supplied on a standard 20m roll. I would not treat ‘20m roll’ as the permitted length of one powered feed. Ask Raymates for the wiring of this configuration and compare brightness at both ends of a trial run. Fewer joins can help installation, but power-supply sizing and access to a replaceable section still belong on the drawing.

Raymates Product Main Selection Factor Typical Application
Hot Selling COB Strip General-purpose width and flexible mounting Hotel accents and linear displays
Mini Size COB Strip Limited mounting space Cabinets and narrow showcases
Super Long COB Strip Run length and power distribution Corridors and continuous coves

If the drawing calls for a broad lit surface instead of a line, ask about Raymates’ Matrix LED Sheet and Lensed LED Sheet. They solve a different layout problem from a linear strip.

Super Long COB Strip for Extended Lighting Runs

What Should B2B Buyers Check Before Ordering?

The lit line may win visual approval quickly. Before placing a commercial order, I would put the proposed driver, wire route, channel and mounting surface on the same sample review sheet.

Electrical and Mechanical Compatibility

The driver schedule has to start with the chosen model. Check whether it calls for 12V or 24V, total the load over the planned metres and select the supply capacity accordingly. On the channel drawing, I mark cut locations, connection points and where wires can turn without pinching. A long lead to a 24V tape can drop voltage before the run starts; for a branch or long line, get the feed arrangement, including any feed at the far end, agreed in writing.

Light Quality and Thermal Reliability

A merchandise display should be judged with the goods in place. White tone, color rendering index (CRI) and differences between samples can look more obvious there than on a bench. Ask how color tolerance and operating heat were tested in the specified enclosure. The sealed recess may need a suitable aluminum channel to transfer heat out. If a waterproof COB strip light is proposed, look at its sealed ends, joints and electrical feeds as well. Water sealing does not answer the heat question.

Quality Verification and Order Consistency

For a wholesale COB LED light strip order, I would retain one lit sample in the actual profile with its driver and diffuser. Check several pieces from the intended batch beside it; then look at cut marks, adhesion and connector fit after assembly. Model-specific certification for the destination market belongs in the purchase file. So do the accepted white tone, PCB width, voltage and packing, ready for the next order.

How Can Raymates Help You Select and Source COB LED Strips?

A quote based on metres misses the difficult part. Send Raymates the section of the channel, likely daily operating time and photographs of the site, especially where access or reflections may matter.

Custom Lighting Solutions and OEM/ODM Services

Raymates’ OEM/ODM discussion can cover voltage, PCB width, color, installation and labeling. With the channel and wiring drawings on the table, the supplier can see a feed or connector problem before production. For repeat wholesale COB LED light strip orders, ask how the first approved sample will be used when later batches are checked.

Explore COB Lighting Options and Contact Raymates

The Raymates COB lighting collection is a useful place to compare the general, narrow and extended-run formats. I would still check the chosen COB LED strip against the channel, desired appearance, driver and mounting method on a working sample.

Project Enquiries

Send Raymates a short site brief: line length, channel width and depth, target white tone, location and likely volume. Ask for the data and sample of the specific model under consideration. A long run deserves a feed plan before purchase.

FAQ

Does a COB LED Strip Need an Aluminum Channel?

Sometimes the installation needs one, sometimes it does not. An aluminum channel can carry the diffuser, shield the tape and help heat leave it, provided the fixture is designed for that. Use the model’s installation instructions and check the temperature after running the assembled light.

Can a 3mm Thin COB LED Strip Light Fit Inside a Display Cabinet?

The tape may be only 3mm wide, but a cabinet groove must also accept its connector and leave a route for heat. Put a short 3mm thin COB LED strip light into the real case, switch it on and view it through the installed glass before deciding.

Is a Waterproof COB Strip Light Suitable for Outdoor Signs?

Outdoor suitability belongs to the complete sign, not just a strip label. Compare the site’s exposure and required IP rating with the selected COB tape, cut-end seals, connectors, driver and mounting method. A waterproof COB strip light option does not make an indoor power connection weatherproof.
