Dotless LED Strip Lights: How to Avoid Hotspots in Shallow Profiles

Table of Contents

Before a cabinet goes into volume production, approve the lighting assembly. Fit the strip and cover into the shallow profile, then check the effect beside the glass shelf or door. A line that looks smooth on the bench may still be reflected in the finished display.

The strip and cover must suit the space inside the channel. Even two channels with the same outside height can leave different gaps above the LEDs. Show the assembled dotless LED strip lights to the buyer from the distance at which the cabinet will be used.

Why hotspots appear in a shallow LED profile

When the cover sits close to the LEDs, light from adjacent chips has less space to overlap. The lens can show separate bright patches. An opal cover spreads the light, but some useful output may be lost before it reaches the shelf.

Measure the optical gap, not just the outside height

An extrusion advertised as 10 mm high is measured on the outside. Its base, adhesive, PCB and lens all occupy part of that height. The distance from the emitting surface to the underside of the lens is smaller. Measure that space when comparing samples.

The width needs a separate check. A 3 mm board might fit a recess while its connector will not. On a short retail shelf, include the cable and end cap in the test. Even a small unlit section at the end may be visible.

LED spacing and the viewer both matter

COB strips place closely spaced chips below a phosphor layer. The source can look more continuous than widely spaced individual LEDs, which helps when the channel cannot be made deeper. Check the sample and its ends rather than judging the strip on its own.

Open and close a glass cabinet door during the test. At a jewellery counter, a reflected line can cross the merchandise even when the cover looks smooth from above.

Choose the strip, channel and diffuser as one system

Use a narrow COB strip where the slot is tight

In a narrow display frame, try a slim COB flexible LED strip light and make sure the PCB sits flat. Watch the cable entry. If a wire pushes one end upward, that section moves closer to the lens and may look brighter than the rest.

Raymates offers a Mini Size COB Strip for compact installations. Ask for the drawing of the version you plan to buy. It should let you check the board, cable and connector against the cabinet opening. Confirm the voltage and cutting interval at the same time.

The broader Raymates range includes flexible LED and COB strips for displays and indoor decorative lighting. PCB widths across the product portfolio range from 3 mm to 30 mm, with low-voltage choices including 12V and 24V. Not every combination applies to every strip. Send the channel drawing with the inquiry and check what the selected product family can supply.

For a wider channel, consider the Hot Selling COB Strip. One version has an 8 mm board. Check the connection against the usable space, and confirm the colour and output options for the intended order.

Compare diffuser appearance and useful output

Looking at the cover and measuring the shelf answer different questions. The first shows whether the points are visible; the second shows how much light reaches the merchandise. Compare covers with the same strip, supply and mounting position. A more opaque cover may hide the dots yet leave the shelf too dim. If there is an illuminance target, measure with the chosen cover fitted.

Check at the dimmed setting used during business hours and again at full output. Label and photograph each cover under the same room lighting. This gives the purchasing team a way to identify the approved lens when replacement parts are needed.

Raymates offers an aluminum profile range for mounting strips. Request the section drawing for the particular profile and lens. Compare the inside dimensions with the PCB and connector, then check the fixing method and wire route against the cabinet.

Build an approval sample that represents the job

Include the strip, channel, cover, adhesive, end caps and wiring in the mock-up. Where a lead has to disappear inside the frame, test a full shelf length so the exit is included. Put a sample of any glossy cabinet finish beside the light.

Check the middle, ends and joins

Follow the lit line from one end to the other. Is there a dark gap by the end cap? Check the cutting interval and the room taken by the cable. At joins, compare the height of the pieces; at corners, assemble the actual joint because the profile and wiring can interrupt the light.

Record what counts as acceptable

Agree where the reviewer will stand. A shopper leaning over a jewellery case is much closer than someone at the shop entrance, and a storage cupboard may have a different requirement again. Record that distance with a photograph and the strip, lens, profile and driver used.

For a wholesale LED strip for projects with repeated fixtures, retain the approved sample. Compare the first production pieces with it at the same dimming setting and under similar room light. The word “dotless” doesn’t tell a factory the viewing distance your customer has in mind.

What to change when a shallow profile still shows dots

Look at the way the current strip is mounted before buying a replacement. Has the adhesive lifted? Is a connector sitting underneath the PCB? Either can move a section closer to the lens. Check the cover against the approved sample too: two lenses can clip into the same extrusion yet scatter light differently.

If the mounting is correct and the dots remain, try a denser source or a cover that scatters more light. Then measure the shelf again. If the display becomes too dim, a deeper channel or a concealed viewing angle may be the better compromise. Don’t assume one stated channel depth will work with every combination of strip and lens.

For a damp area, ask a waterproof LED strip manufacturer how the jacket, cut ends, cable entries and connections are protected. The sealed strip can be thicker than an indoor sample. Test the sealed version in the final profile before approving it.

Send useful dimensions with a project inquiry

An inquiry is easier to answer when it includes a cross-section and a view of the cabinet. Mark the usable width, gap above the strip and lit length. Add the quantity, colour, voltage, dimming method and protection required. Show which end takes the cable and where glass will sit in relation to the light.

Raymates supplies drivers, controllers, connectors, extension cables and aluminium channels as well as strips. Its engineering team can review a repeated cabinet application and prepare project and installation drawings. For the sample, confirm the required cut and connector, and ask which accessories will be supplied with the strip.

Raymates can customize product power for different brightness needs. For a custom configuration, the company offers OEM production to customer requirements and ODM design and production services.

Before shipment, the company’s quality-control team inspects products. Its workshop uses instruments to test electrical and optical properties as well as aging-test equipment. Installation instructions and video or online guidance form part of the available after-sales support. For a cabinet project, ask which documentation applies to the exact strip and accessory combination.

FAQ

Does COB always mean dotless in a shallow channel?

No. COB is a useful starting point for a continuous line, but a sample must still be checked with the selected lens and channel. View it from the distance used for project acceptance.

Can a diffuser remove every hotspot?

It may help, but it is not a guaranteed fix. A denser cover can hide the points and also reduce the light on the shelf. If the line still looks uneven, check the source position and depth of the channel.

Is a 24V COB LED strip suitable for every shallow profile?

No single voltage makes a strip suitable for every channel. A 24V product needs a compatible driver and must fit the profile, connector included. Check its width, thickness and cut interval on the chosen configuration.
